Community Scale Renewable
Energy Projects

The contact for this group is Paul on paulmartyn@onetel.com

Info on the next meeting is on the 'whats on' page.

This group will focus on developing and implementing large/community scale renewable energy projects (e.g. wind farms, community biogas digesters, community hydro etc). Obviously some ideas will overlap with other groups and intersect with other projects, but that is a good thing and increases community resilience, so long as we all feed back activities through the groups.

The Local and National Governments targets for CO2 reduction (34% by 2020) are almost certainly an under estimate by some distance(Facing the Future a FOE, COOP Bank and Tyndale centre report). What this means in real terms, when you look at which sectors produce what proportion of CO2, is a massive and unprecedented reduction in how much energy we use and change inhow we generate it.

The implications of the work on Preparing for Peak Oil: Local Authorities and the Energy Crisis by the Oil Depletion Analysis Centre are also stark and clear: If you want to live in a sustainable town adopt the strategies now while you can still afford the oil . Leaving it until later will be too expensive and just too little too late.

The good news is that all the strategies and technologies already exist, we don't have to discover anything new, except perhaps a willingness to act sooner rather than later. That's where TCL and this group can play a real part.

Extensive work is already underway for developing community renewable energy generation, including large scale funding issues, biogas deployment, wind park development and community owned and run models of energy production - see the links below. Unless you can find a way of making every single house in Lancaster carbon neutral and half the cars in Lancaster carbon neutral by 2020, meeting CO2 targets let alone building resilience to peak oil is just not acheivable without big local renewable energy projects. Try the BBC energy generating calcutator tool for a taster.

If you want to get involved, in TCL click here to register and come along to the meetings and events - see the dates below and the Whats On! page. If you can't wait and want to offer skills and expertese to this group then please email tclenergy@guiver.plus.com

Green Energy Bond Proposal by Steve Dealer

This proposal has enourmous potential for developing funding for renewable energy sources not just for Lancaster but many places. The following links are pdf files of discussion documents and contact lists indicating the work done so far by Steve Dealer please. Send comments back to the group via tclenergy@guiver.plus.com and they will be circulated.
