News from the Skills for Community Building Group
We are an informal group who meet monthly at one another’s houses to explore ways of spreading the word about Transition City Lancaster to a wider Lancaster community, while getting to know and enjoy each others’ company. We do this in two ways: identifying various skills needed for community building (e.g. facilitation, group dynamics, conflict resolution, and trust frameworks) and learning more about how life might be when the oil based resources we take for granted, are no longer there.
We feel strongly that to be a success, TCL needs to involve many
more people, from all backgrounds and ages, and we have been busy
looking at
ways to achieve this through meetings, publicity and events. Luckily
our city has many venues that are very supportive to community groups.
All
our dates for meetings etc are on The TCL website www.transitioncitylancaster.org
We also organise discussion events where we talk about the issues
we face in relaxed settings. We welcome both people who are new
to climate challenges, as well as those more knowledgeable. For our
first event,
we have arranged for Professor Barbara Maher to discuss her research
on
pollution levels in Lancaster, and its relationship to the environment
and health e.g. increase in asthma. It will be held at 7.30, Tuesday
8 June 2010 at the Storey Institute. Many thanks go to the Storey
Institute Creative Industries for sponsoring the event, under its
monthly,
Café
Scientifique scheme. We are sure it will be a very stimulating
evening, and the first of many more.
We are also exploring ideas for involving more of our neighbourhoods
in building sustainable communities, in ways enjoyable to all.
For instance: organising a Food Fest on a Lancaster bridge; running
an Eco
Games evening,
as well as strengthening our own skills by attending the NCBI
(National Coalition Building Institute) workshop on Welcoming Diversity.
If you would like to come to one of our meetings, or find out
more about what we do, contact our group co-ordinator jillrob@soundlife.orangehome.co.uk
or anna.lorbiecki@btinternet.com .
Below are some previous notes and minutes etc
The function of the group to include (amongst others)
a) Strengthening a community which values diversity and is inclusive
b) Supporting the needs of vulnerable people, for example, very elderly people and people with various disabilities
c)Engaging with our community elders to encourage them to share their wealth of knowledge, skills, experience and expertise across a wide range of Transition-related areas such as cooking, sewing, knitting, gardening, building, DIY, living with less, etc., etc.
d) Skill sharing in the crucial Transition skills of facilitating group dynamics and conflict resolution
e) Sharing information about different structures for community living e.g. co-housing, housing co-op, eco-villages etc.
f) Carbon evenings – informal opportunities for people to support each other in reducing their carbon footprint
g) Outreach. Various ways of going out to the wider community and sharing information about the transition movement and facilitating discussions about ways to strengthen community as well dealing with the emotional aspects of facing the changes to come.
