Transition Arts

There is loads going on with the Transition Arts group.

Here are the notes of the latest meeting - July 31st 2010

Re the scrap store we are being given new agencies to contact every week but they seem to all lead round in circles. Its very frustrating. The county council officers in the properties departments are interested but we will see if they will offer a freehold or a low rent, or even if they have any sort of suitable building. We've decided to be a community group and perhaps work towards being a Community Interest Group later. This is just to apply for funding etc. We have thought that we might ask other scrapstores and recycling groups if they might like to take us under their wing. This might be the next move. A big splash in the local newspaper about how Lancaster needs a scrapstore might bring lots of rich, property-owning philanthropists out into the open (oh really?!)

The Sewing Cafe on the other hand is building nicely. I'm getting some sewing done! The library are most welcoming and helpful and I must remember to plug them on the radio. CVS are checking our funding application for the sewing machine (and other stuff) funding.

We have settled an agreement with Mollie Baxter for the Creative Writing Workshop in October and when she has finished her present project we will sort out advertising, programme, tickets etc.

We have had misunderstandings about what's happening with the radio but that's sorted. The first programme has a food theme to go along with Food Fortnight. The first recording has been done, more next week. We really need to know all events and meeting dates for September and 1st week in October for a list to be made and read out on the radio. It would be nice if events could have a blurb with them that outlined what was happening at the event or what the meetings are about. Samagita could you request this on the big email please as time is passing...

For artists among you I am working on having an art group based on the skill-sharing model but I am looking for a suitable venue. This may not be a transition group, I don't know.

We are also thinking of calling this group Arts and media or having a separate media group because of the subjects (newspaper and radio) that have been covered. Any thoughts?

Next Arts group meeting at mine, 48, Coniston Rd, LA1 3NJ will be the August 28th, 2-5 as usual and will cover some important aspects of different projects. Careful writing of creative writing advert, finalising radio for September, new projects for art and craft. Possibly a basic home maintenance project - changing light bulbs and fuses, putting up shelves, how to handle basic tools. Any thoughts on this welcome.

Wendy

A bit of history - 3rd September 2009

After the Lancaster Transition Network meeting on Wednesday 2nd September (where updates from the various groups were shared) a small number of people interested in forming an Arts group met over a drink. We chatted about creativity and art, and how this fitted with Transition ideas. It was completely unplanned and informal - just new friends sharing an evening.

How can the arts - your art, perhaps - support and enrich the Transition idea? What new stories, images and sounds might reflect the sadness or joy of this time of transition?

How might we envision and nurture a saner, kinder world?
We are a group in formation, eagerly awaiting your ideas and creative talents.
